Costume Designers Guild Winners

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

PERIOD FILM: The King's Speech- Jenny Beaven
CONTEMPORARY FILM: Black Swan- Amy Westcott
FANTASY FILM: Alice in Wonderland- Colleen Atwood

For what will the Academy prefer: the understated costuming in the years top contender, the over the top, more is more (which they typically prefer in tech categories) for a Tim Burton flick (which they typically prefer in tech categories: see Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd), or the densely crafted, character specific designs in a film wrongfully snubbed! (Write-in campaign for Black Swan!)  Stupid Rodarte controversy...

Costume Designers Guild Nominations

CONTEMPORARY FILM
Black Swan- Amy Westcott
Burlesque- Michael Kaplan
Inception- Jeffrey Kurland
The Social Network- Jacqueline West
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps- Ellen Mirojnick

PERIOD FILM
The Fighter- Mark Bridges
The King's Speech- Jenny Beaven
True Grit- Mary Zophres

FANTASY FILM
Alice in Wonderland- Colleen Atwood
The Tempest- Sandy Powell
TRON: Legacy- Christine Bieselin Clark & Michael Wilkinson

Kind of the strange year for costume design, since really only Alice in Wonderland, and maybe The Tempest count as pure baity, eye candy films in this category.  I'm sure The King's Speech will get nominated, but that's very subdued period, not the flashy, Oscar-endorsed more is more type of film.  Burlesque, you might just be an 2-time Oscar nominee this year...eat that up Razzie Awards!

snubbed and potentially doomed from any Oscar nominations: Bright Star, also rather surprised Inglorious Basterds missed the mark, but maybe category confusion was the problem, was it period or fantasy?
