LA gave it's nod to The Descendants (some day, I'll get around to posting a review of it; I wasn't as fond as some)...I suppose The Artist is a New York thing.  However, that's all it won, as the Los Angeles film critics spread their love to The Tree of Life, Michael Fassbender and Jessica Chastain, and even Hanna.

One can always count on Los Angeles to have their sort of personality with Best Actress; rarely is a frontrunner (or an American) on their roster, for instance:

• Leave it to the Los Angeles Film Critics (my home turf; so I always feel anxious when they announce) to open their cinematic hearts to not one, not two, but three film not even eligible for this years Oscars-- Carlos, Mother and A Prophet.  Carlos, the five-hour French film that's been a critical favorite since debuting at Cannes in May was shown on television's Sundance Channel and thus not eligible, whilst Mother and A Prophet were eligible last year as they were the official foreign language candidates from their respective countries-- S. Korea and France.

• The other front is predictable, if still nice-- The Social Network wins big, and proves it's the critics pick.  The awards showering for the films music confuses me since I don't remember any of it at all...

• I get the impression that Black Swan will be the critical pet in the cinematography department, and well be ghettoized as the "Children of Men" of 2010, which won a buttload of critical cinematography prizes only to wind up an Oscar bridesmaid when the day finally happens; I hope not-- Libatique's beautifully gritty, naturalistic work here is ballsy yet controlled, just like the film itself.

The Coasts

This weekend will be huge for awards geeks like myself as the LA Film Critics announce their winners this Sunday, followed by the NY Film Critics on Monday. They are make or break awards bodies, and fortunately for the film world, they usually make fairly bold choices. I'd expect big pull for something like The Hurt Locker, A Serious Man, and maybe Up. For some reason I think both organizations will temporarily stop the Up in the Air sweep, as LA and NY don't always hold up to group think mentality. Here's a look back at their history:

I praise the LA film critics for their bold and worthy selection of WALL-E as best picture-- it's a real shame now that most animated features are ghettoized in only one category. This is far and away the first critics group of the season that seems to have avoided group-think mentality. YAY!

Obviously been looking forward to There Will Be Blood, but one should know that LAFCA hasn't agreed with the Academy Awards since Schindler's List, way, way back in 1993. Otherwise, it was mostly a foreign affair taking rein with LA filmists with The Diving Bell, 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days, and La Vie en Rose raking up most of the attention. Ever the individualist, No Country For Old Men was completely snubbed.
