The Bourne Ultimatum- Christopher Rouse
The Diving Bell & the Butterfly- Juliette Welfling
Into the Wild- Jay Cassidy
No Country For Old Men- "Rodrick Jaynes" (The Coen Brothers)
There Will Be Blood- Dylan Tichenor
Many Oscar prognisticators have noted you can't win Best Picture without a Film Editing nomination (and point that as a valid reason to award Crash over Brokeback Mountain in a recent and ugly example.) There does seem to be a pattern with that however, the last movie to win picture without an editing nomination was in 1980 with Ordinary People. That being said I still think Bourne or even The Diving Bell have a decent shot at winning the editing Oscar (the ACE Eddie Award is handed out tomorrow which might shed more light on the eventual winner.) It's a good fill this year with different kind of films acknowledged with different styles and pacing. I'm torn between No Country and There Will Be Blood, since both films are a bit slow, but monumental in their sparse cuts. Not to cry foul but I would have like to see Juno nominated here (and history prevails that it's dark horse best picture win is probably out of the question) since it's hard to put together a comedy, especially a clever one with a big ensemble. It's edited in a non-showy way, but the jokes and performances click so well and it's a shame the Oscar's notorious prejudice with comedy snubs the very best most of the time. Arguably Juno is more about timing than No Country For Old Men, I believe.
